I’ve seen this book ALLL over the book world for years. I’m so glad to finally have taken the time to read it! Also, this is the VERY first book I made some tabs! I just had a few laugh out loud moments that I wanted to remember!
I was really worried about this being middle grade and I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else. I admit, I don’t read much MG but I think that’s going to change.
I loved Morrigan from the very beginning! She’s really sarcastic but all she really craves is love. She was fun and quirky! Actually, pretty much all the characters are and that’s what makes this so interesting and fun. I loved them all and they are all so unique. There are some parts of this book that are so sad. I think that Morrigan ends up finding her tribe and it’s what I loved the most.
Can I take a minute to shout out to Fen? I’m not a cat person but she was one of my favorites!! haha
There is so much world building and Townsend did an amazing job with it! I felt like this was kind of a chunky book for MG but I never felt bored or like the story dragged. The one thing that drove me crazy were ALL the secrets. It actually drives Morrigan crazy and I get it. I do like intrigue and mystery but I hate waiting until the end for ANY of them to be revealed.
I do get why people think that it’s similar to Harry Potter with the trials. I didn’t really get any of those vibes. I felt like this was a story that stood out on it’s own. I did wish that we got a little more. I felt like the trials were so short and didn’t really take much time. More details or more extravagant trials would have elevated this book for me.
Overall, this was such a great middle grade read. I’m really excited to read the next book but I have to wait a week for my second readathon! If you are looking for a funny and interesting middle grade, this is a great option. Just remember… so many secrets!!!
