Dear Martin
by Nic Stone
Dear Martin has a unique set up - between some of the chapters, our protagonist, Justyce, complements the active story by writing letters to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. kind of like a journal/project. In these letters we really get insight into his thoughts that are not making it out into conversations. This book is powerful, important, and necessary. Through character dialogue the reader gets to see a lot about racism, police brutality, affirmative action, social injustice, interracial relationships, familial issues, and more. Nic Stone does a wonderful job stoking the flames. Dear Martin gave me all the emotions: I smiled and laughed. I got hot and angry. I cried. This is a must-read. The back of the book has an assortment of review blurbs from acclaimed authors but two that stand out to me most after reading are from Jason Reynolds ("An undeniably real feast of fury and forgiveness.") and Brendan Kiely ("A mic drop of truth. Hats off.")
I am so ready for the sequel, Dear Justyce, to be released this Fall!
