justinlife 's review for:
Less
by Andrew Sean Greer
This was a lot of fun. Arthur Less is a character that doesn't see how wonderful his life really is. It can be hard to take when you realize he's going on an adventure across the world to avoid an ex.
I think this book will resonate with gays of a certain age. Greer weaves in nostalgia with fear of getting older beautifully and allows his character to fall, stumble, and be embarrassed, but the joke is not really at Arthur's expense.
The first part is a bit slow, but picks up when he hits Germany. Once there you get the feeling that the author is really gonna let this character have some fun, even if he doesn't know it yet.
There is a play on the unreliable narrator trope that I enjoyed. The narrator is a character itself and it was fun trying to figure out who he was.
The problems for me were the slow start and there is an "Eat, Pray, Love" feel to it. Like, why do Americans need to travel the world to either find themselves or runaway? I say this as someone who's done it. haha.
Overall this book is a lot of fun and a welcome break for a time when travel seems taboo.
