A Phoenix First Must Burn by Patrice Caldwell
4.0

I loved this book! I loved seeing us Black women and girls shown from so many great perspectives. We have the warrior woman, the introverted “nerd”, the leader, the seductress, the soft spoken woman. We house so much complexity and I loved the representation of it in this book! The only reason this wasn’t quite a 5 star read for me is because there were a few stories that just weren’t for me. But I thoroughly enjoyed this! 4.5 stars.

1. When Life Hands You a Lemon Fruitbomb by Amerie: 3/5 good
2. Gilded by Elizabeth Acevedo: 2/5 ok
3. Wherein Abigail Fields Recalls Her First Death And, Subsequently, Her Best Life by Rebecca Roanhorse: 4/5 great
4. The Rules of the Land by Alaya Dawn Johnson: 2/5 ok
5. A Hagiography of Starlight by Somaiya Daud: 1/5 didn’t enjoy at all
6. Melie by Justina Ireland: 5/5 amazing (my favorite)
7. The Goddess Provides by L. L. McKinney: 5/5 amazing
8. Hearts Turned to Ash by Dhonielle Clayton: 4/5 great
9. Letting the Right One In by Patrice Caldwell: 5/5 amazing (an extra star for the Queen of the Damned references
