The Dysasters by P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast
3.0

“The most important thing a woman can give is her trust. Earn that first, and then you’ll earn a love that will last.”

P. C. Cast is one of my favorite authors. I love the House of Night series. Unfortunately I was a little underwhelmed with this book.

The concept was really promising: a scientist manipulating embryos causing kids to have supernatural elemental powers. It started out really fast paced then quickly fizzled out. The most action in the book took place in the first 20 pages, the rest of the story was boring. It was kinda like reading a book backwards. I wish it had a better introduction, instead of jumping right into the action in the beginning.

The way Foster and Tate learn to control their powers felt cheesy and like it could have been in a children’s book instead of YA.

I also really didn’t like the dialogue between Foster and Tate. They were both annoying and unlikable characters, and their romance felt forced. Most of their time is spent arguing and making stereotypical assumptions about each other.

One positive thing is that there is really good transgender representation through the character Charlotte.

If the sequel is ever released, I would be willing to give the series another chance. Hopefully the next book will be better.
