0 - 24% I hated this book because it was SO TEENAGER.
25% I thought I figured out a plot twist and was back in.
50% I realized my guess was wrong, but I was even more in.
100% I had a lot of feelings.
This book made me cry multiple times, literal tears running down my face while reading in high sunshine in the pool. But it also was irritating and difficult to read because the main character is SO FUCKING ANNOYING JESUS CHRIST.
And then there's the dad. The dad who is a cop. The dad who is a cop who punched a witness and doesn't get fired because all his brothers in blue say he's really a good guy. And that, more than anything, is stopping me from giving this book a good review. Because this is untimely and tone deaf and frustrating. (You can read his words on it here.)
So I'm leaving this book without a rating. Read it, if you want a heartfelt YA. Read it for its brilliant and wonderful cast full of queer characters. Read it for its bitingly hilarious and zippy dialogue. Read it if you love superheroes with soul. But read it knowing that the cops don't learn the lesson they need to, and read it like it was written, as if it existed before the past year's reckoning.
