My Cousin Rachel
by Daphne du Maurier
Brilliant from start to finish! It's a bewitching story, just as Rachel is a bewitching character. Even though the story is charming at times, there's a sense of impending doom and brooding suspense that lends deep meaning to the tiniest details.
Rachel is so enigmatic, even now I can't decide if I like her or not. Was she a horrible monster of a person, or just a sweet misunderstood victim of circumstance? I don't know! That's what makes it so entertaining!
The gradual descent of the story into hypnotic insanity is brilliantly written. Towards the end, I can't tell who is sane and who is lying, but it never feels confusing. The tension between the characters is perfectly balanced.
This book is just as good as "Rebecca", and I love it!
