How to Date Men When You Hate Men
by Blythe Roberson
emotional
funny
lighthearted
medium-paced
An adequate examination of a woman's perspective on gender roles (especially if you’re a man). I didn’t find it particularly funny, not (I don’t think) because I’m a man, but because her jokes are overwhelmingly supported by pop culture references. This is the main issue: her brain has been rotted by romantic comedies and her full time job of being a celebrity researcher for Colbert (something she more or less admits). It seems like she’s unable to contextualize situations or issues without tying them to some movie or celebrity.
However, there are lots of points worth listening to: her opinions on marriage, how art and relationships are related and societal perception of these relations, the duality of having academic knowledge of gendered oppression but sexual and romantic feelings that run counter to that on an individual level, etc.
