Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian
4.0

I have to warn those that don't like this but this is a slow burn novel.
That being said...I liked it a lot!

In the 1600s- Mary is married to an older widower Thomas. He is violent towards her but he's so revered by the community that no one believes her when she tells them. When Thomas stabs Mary in the hand with a fork (or as they call it the "devil's tines", she decides to petition the courts for a divorce. She goes through the trial and no one that believes her (which are few) is believed themselves so she isn't granted what she wants.

Then because of increasing accusations she is again put on trial to be tried as a witch or consorting with the devil.

This book made me so mad that because she is a woman and her husband is a man, that he is the one they look to for the truth! I am in turn fascinated by the "easy" way that one can accuse another of witchcraft or evil acts and be so convincing that everyone else takes it immediately for truth. No evidence really needed.
