The Bone Shard Daughter
by Andrea Stewart
Am I crazy to think that not much happened in this book?
This story is told through 4 different points of view. It might be unusual for me, but I really liked all of the characters. There really wasn't a single person that I disliked and didn't want to hear more from. I think I leaned most toward Javis’ point of view as I really enjoyed the smuggling aspect of his character. All of the main characters were well written and well established with a solid history and background that we got to know throughout the book. Jumping around from person to person didn't feel clunky, or pressured, and each chapter flowed beautifully into the next storyline or point of view. Trying to connect the dots to bring them all of the different strings together is one of my favorite things to do while reading a novel, it makes me feel like I'm really part of the story, and that was no different here. The fact that most of the points of view actually DID connect to each other by the end made my overly invested little heart beat faster.
Now back to my first point. Am I crazy to think that not much happened in this book? I understand that it's the first in a series, and it's most likely laying groundwork, and building characters or us. But I think I could have used a bit more plot. There really wasn't anything to look forward to. The book kinda kept trucking on, and I kinda just kept going along with it, but I feel like we just don't have any kind of destination in mind. There were some big moments where I feel like the direction of the story may have changed, but there weren't any real moments where I was holding my breath, or sitting on the edge of my seat.
I am looking forward to the next installment, but I am hoping that there might be more of a plot focus now that we have a solid foundation built with the characters.
