Sugar
by Bernice L. McFadden
Ok y'all, this book broke me. It took me about two weeks to read this. After reading the prologue, I knew I was going to be in for one sad, depressing story. I would read a chapter or two and just be kind of exhausted after reading it, like wtf did I just read. Or wtf I cannot believe that just happened. It. Was. Heavy.
Sugar Lacey. Pearl Taylor.
These are the two main characters in the book that build such a precious friendship, a special bond that each women desperately needed in their life to make each of them realize that they needed happiness.
Sugar was born in Arkansas to an unknown mother who gave her up as a newborn to the Lacey sisters that owned a brothel. Sugar was raised in the brothel, she learned how to live her life being used for men's pleasure. She had a hard time finding herself, moving from place to place - running into trouble time and time again until she moved to Bigelow, in a house right next to Ms. Pearl.
Pearl is the kind of women that reminds me of that sweet lady next door that will bake you a peach cobbler just to see you smile. Pearl also has a heartbreaking story; she lives her life every day in grief and sorrow until she meets Sugar.
Their stories intertwine, going way back to before Sugar was born that had my mind like....
