Come Close by Sappho
4.0

Sappho’s work was a lyrical masterpiece, proving that human feeling has not changed and that emotion transcends millennia. It’s such a shame most of her work is lost to history, but I’m glad we have managed to discover some of it. If I could, I’d give her work fifty stars out of five.

However, this translation isn’t my favourite, but isn’t the worst I’ve read. Some of the phrasing was beautiful, but most of it felt unlyrical and clunky, which is sad when you consider the lyrical nature of other Sappho translations. I’d rate the poems themselves highly, but this edition is one I’d rate around 3/5 stars.

One thing that I do recommend is to research the context behind her work as you read it. Scholars have deduced the meanings behind the fragments of her work, and in doing so, have uncovered masterpieces.

Overall, with the combined ratings of the content and the translation, I think this deserves a 4/5 star review. But if you do buy this book, definitely look into other editions, even if they are the free ones online.
