Boy oh boy, this little novella is quite literally a dizzying journey. I've still got a bit of a head high from it. I went to New Orleans with some friends a few years ago and we all made a deal that everyone could pick an activity of some sort that we would absolutely stick to on top of whatever else we decided to do. I chose to go on a bayou/swamp tour and I found the environment to be both alluring and frightening, something ancient and untamed that wasn't held to the same laws as the rest of us. Powell took this feeling and cranked it up to 11, creating a dark and seductive atmospheric tale that tempts you to go further while also being afraid to take just one more step. Powell's description of the environment and the felt intoxicating and they masterfully weaved the characters and plot into that fabric. As much as I loved this story, please look into the triggers as they are very heavy and I found them difficult at times. Powell deals with these hard topics with grace, but it does not make it any easier if you are sensitive to them!
I hope Powell writes more, lengthier (I just want more!) works like this in the future and I will be reading more from them as soon as I can!
