The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
5.0

This book is a work of art: one of my most enjoyed reads in a long time! And yet when Jo asked me what it was about, I struggled to sum up the plot efficiently. I think the Night Circus centres more around the experience of actually reading it rather than being plot-driven. Not that there isn't a plot, of course there is! But it felt secondary to enjoying the atmosphere and immersing yourself in Morgenstern's wonderful writing, detail, and description.
.
Celia and Marco are players in a game that they do not understand. Pitted against each other by two old rivals, their playground is the Night Circus - a mysterious place that arrives without warning and disguises real magic as magic tricks. The details of the Circus are absolutely astounding, spellbinding, enchanting, intriguing, basically, I want to live there. As Liz @bookishbonbon said, this book hits all of your senses, so much so that you feel like you've fell through the pages into the Circus, smelling the caramel scented air, feeling the heat of the bonfire, tasting the chocolate-covered popcorn...
.
The only thing I didn't like was Marco's treatment of Isobel. He was rather an arsehole. Besides that, I didn't even mind that some parts of the story weren't explicitly explained or cleared up - it just added to the ethereal feeling of it all! Because I don't think one can ever truly understand magic.
.
Definitely pick this one up if you haven't already! I regret waiting so long to do it. 5 glittering stars!
