What You Did
by Claire McGowan
Talk about a whirlwind of a story! As much as I normally don't usually go for books where a majority of the characters are unlikable, learning about everyone's backstory really helps with understanding how they got to their unlikability over time (or why they never bothered to change). The friend group the book is focused on is ABSOLUTELY toxic and the author does a good job of making that clear from beginning to end. Even the bouncing back between present-day and their college years was done well (also something I'm not usually a fan of in books) and was incorporated seamlessly for the plot. Trigger warning though, with a story heavily revolved around rape, there was a fair amount of unsupportiveness coming from the female leads. However, I do like that the author makes it a point to highlight the fact that, unfortunately, a high percentage of rape is committed by someone the person knows. I got sucked in right away and highly recommend it for anyone that's looking for twists and turns with a satisfying (and shocking) conclusion.
