Why We're Polarized
by Ezra Klein
“It’s a mistake to imagine our bank accounts are the only reasonable drivers of political action. As we become more political we become more interested in politics as a means of self-expression and group identity. ‘It is not that citizens are unable to recognize their interests, rather it’s that material concerns are irrelevant to the individuals goals when forming a policy opinion.’”
“It’s bigger than any one candidate for president. It’s true, even if the personal characteristics of the other party’s nominee leave your standard-bearer looking like a decadent sleaze bag. When you vote, you’re voting to keep a candidate, a coalition, a movement, a media ecosystem, a set of donors, and a universe of people you don’t like and maybe even fear, maybe with good reason, out of power. All of that gives you reason to like your candidate, and even if you can’t do that, to justify voting for him anyway.”
