My Heart Is a Chainsaw
by Stephen Graham Jones
I really wish I liked this more than I did. I feel that with Jones’ works I have to work really hard to pay attention to a plot that doesn’t pick up enough to be worth the trouble. While the ending to this was really good and well written, it sort of took precedent over the initial love letter to slasher movies theme that the book was shaped by. While the information and attention to details when referring back to slashers may be impressive to some, I felt that while it was cool it really took away from the plot—it allowed for the main character to ramble about these instead of things actually happening. Overall, I think that this shit review might be a “me” issue because I have never enjoyed Jones’ writing style in the first place but, this left me empty handed and sad. I’d recommend this if you love to have simple story lines delivered in complex ways through a multitude of facts that cluster the flow of the story with a tinge of life altering trauma. Happy I’m done with this :/
