The Pact by Sharon Bolton
4.0

The Pact by Sharon Bolton is a fast paced psychological thriller that explores the dynamics of friendships and loyalty. Six bright friends who are waiting for their A level exam results have a glittering future waiting ahead of them. They spend their days drunk, lazing around Talitha's pool house. Amongst the rich gang, Megan is the only one who's on scholarship and is deemed as the cleverest of them all. Together they form the senior prefect team with Felix almost naturally becoming the Alpha of the gang. The rest, Amber, Xav, Talitha and Daniel fall in line. But their golden summer shatters when a dare goes wrong. Lives are upended and one of them has to take the fall.

When Felix pushes them to accept the dare, they say yes without thinking of any consequences. But before they know it, they end up taking the lives of a mother and her two young daughters. When push came to shove, Megan decided to take the fall with the promise that each of her friends owe her a favour once she's out of prison. What they expected to be a short stint in prison would end up taking away 20 years of her life. And when Megan comes out, she instantly realises that her friends are no longer what they once used to be. All alone, she decides to claim back her favours only to learn that they have no intention in sticking to their words. But Megan being the sharpest of them all hatches a plan that'll rattle their minds and enjoys watching them suffer psychologically. It is here that the games begin, with each player putting himself first, all loyalties turning into pieces. The once formed circle is now broken.

The story, like any other thriller throws one twist after another, making it a nail biting read. The atmospheric setting, characterization and plot are so unique that I found it almost impossible to put it down. It was only the end that left me a little disappointed because it all felt too rushed. But Sharon knows how to please her readers and this book almost had it all. I still recommend this beauty.
