Klaus: The Complete Collection by Dan Mora, Grant Morrison
2.0

The Complete Klaus Rating: ⭐⭐

The score might be a bit harsh, and I've probably now made enemies out of you all (soz). I'm a notoriously picky reader and only really truly love ~10% of the comics I read, I'm also not the biggest fan of Grant's writing so the cards were stacked against me going into this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The main 7 issues told a tight-knit story but there were a lot cliches e.g. the villain's motive, the "chosen one" narrative and the spirits seemingly and unexplainably granting Klaus powers without proper justification. These elements really took me out of the story.

The specials didn't add much value to me personally, they brought scope, but I often felt like it was just "here's stuff going on in the background, don't worry though because it doesn't really relate to anything in the story." I wish Grant expanded the narrative around the Lunar War, but it was mostly ignored and treated as noise in my opinion. These specials also felt like Grant was slipping back to their natural state of high concept storytelling without the heart that made the first 7 issues a better read.

I quite enjoyed Dan Mora's art, the use of light and shadows was particularly clever. Xmasville was the only book that was hand coloured and it elevated the art immensely, I was taken back by the details and colour blending - going back, I kind of wished that everything was hand coloured to the same level, I suspect my scoring would have been higher if it was.

Not bad overall, just a bit dodgy in some places!
