This is among the most beautifully written books I've ever read. It's a narrative of a mother and daughter's trip to Cabo Verde as the daughter conducts research on the PAIGC education program, and that history of struggle and decolonization (and the process of writing that history) is woven into a story of diaspora and family. At times the writing is very funny, at other moments it had me in tears, but overall it is a story of love between a mother and daughter as they navigate a world defined by gendered labor, uneven development, and the unhealed wounds of colonialism. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
