The plot is interesting: a group of friends want to prove if good/God and evil/the devil really exist. Having recently read Dracula they decide the easiest way to go about this is finding a supernatural being, a “manifestation of evil” as they call it. Their search leads them to Bulgaria where rumours have it that a mysterious army of horsemen aids the Bulgarian people at night and then vanishes. Their hideout has never been discovered as it is supposedly under a spell to deter people from going near it.

Sadly, the book is very badly written though. Half of it could be scrapped at is contains lengthy monologues where the author inserts himself and his religious and philosophical opinions as narrator even though these don’t advance the story in any way as well as unnecessarily detailed descriptions of items and people down to their exact hight, weight and the colour of each strand of their hair.

Despite an also unnecessary and lengthy introduction stating the author’s intention to make the book interesting and easy to read he uses complicated words, long winded scentences and “poetry disguised as prose” aka a poem without line breaks which just makes its readability a disaster.

My recommendation: don’t waste your time on this book, but if you’re really interested in the actual story skip the introduction and first chapter as well as the monologues. You won’t miss anything important.
