myntop 's review for:
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie
I listened to this book on the Libby app, and I found it very interesting that the author read his own book for the audio version! I was a little annoyed that it was obvious it was taken from the CD version of the audio book because it kept saying "end of disc #" at certain parts, but other than that I enjoyed the reading of it.
The story itself was very entertaining and somewhat eye-opening to what some of the reservations might have been like at this point in our country's history. I haven't ever lived on or near a reservation so I didn't know much about them at all. The fact that alcoholism was so rampant among the Native Americans on reservations is rather heart-breaking. As was the constant fighting amongst themselves.
There were some very good messages in the story as well. I like that Arnold wanted more for his life and actually did something about it instead of just wishing and hoping for things to get better. I also liked the idea that our true friends do remain our friends forever, in spite of anything that might come between us along the way of life.
