Knockemstiff
by Donald Ray Pollock
Knockemstiff is a collection of short stories about people in this rural town and it depicts the lives of the American underclass. Everyone’s sweaty, miserable, chewing tobacco, shitting, and bleeding. There’s some weird religious thing happening, there’s some weird incest thing also going on. Lots and lots of fuckedupness. I had a hard time staying interested in the book despite it being quite short because in each chapters we get new characters and all of their lives are all equally horrifying. The story doesn’t seem to let up, there’s no happiness to be seen here at all and i’m genuinely starting to feel down myself. Honestly read this book if you’re interested and you like the author’s writing because one thing i can tell you about it is that it isn’t bad. It’s just depressing as hell.
