Kingstown Burning : A Novel
by Rachelle J. Gray
adventurous
tense
fast-paced
Kingstown Buring explores relationships and community through the characters in the book. The legalization and generification of marijuana hold up the main ARC of the story. The characters are what makes the story good. My favourites were Nubya and Judah! The relationship they have is so deep and beautiful. Other people might not understand the harmony they have but it's okay because they know what they have is special.
I enjoyed learning more about Rastafarianism. I only knew the bare basics before reading Kingstown Buring but through Judah's conversion to the Rastafarianism, I was able to learn more about the culture and the community that Rastafarianism fosters for its believers. I thought Kingstown Buring showed Caribbean culture well and was authentic to Caribbean life.
I did feel like the plot could be incongruent at times. The scenes were all beautifully done but the connection of them seemed a little off to me at times. The climax threw me for a loop and the ending was not what I expected; it seemed a little rushed. Overall though I enjoyed Kingstown Buring. It was a quick read.
Thanks to the Rachelle Gray for sending me an ebook to review.
