The Broken Kingdoms
by N.K. Jemisin
This second installation gave me my favourite kind of character, an anti-hero. It continues from the end of the first book and gives you insight into the new world after the major shift in life at the end of book 1. It is set after a few years have passed, but most of the individuals from the first book are back and playing significant roles. Alongside those familiar names are new ones who show us what life is like on the ground, and dealing with the new entities that are godlings.
New villains, and new plot lines all lead to a climax that made me tear up even as it left me excited for more.
Another must-read from this author who is quickly proving her worth as an author in this genre.
