I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan
3.0

Funny how I'm always drawn to books with those infernal types. Quality may vary from book to book, but I always get some kind of entertainment from them.

I picked up this book mainly because a friend said she wouldn't speak to me about any other book until I read this one. Naturally, I trusted her sound judgement, she's also a voracious reader, and dove in.

It's...okay. It's not a grand piece of literature, nor is it trying to be. It's not my favorite "get into the mind of the Devil story"....that belongs to the Sandman's version of the character, both comic and TV show. This Lucifer is much more of an enforcer of evil rather than a punisher, though he admits he doesn't like evil, doing this whole business just for spite. Which I can admire, considering my own pettiness.

I was expecting more sass and one-liners. There were plenty, I was just looking for more.

I did get a kick though of Lucifer's more existential moments, such as falling on his knees and weeping in a garden because of all those human sensations he feels. I will admit, reading that passage made me want to go out and look at the world. (However, the above 90 degree heat stopped me)

However, there is a revelation at the end that makes me wonder why the existentialism didn't go further. Of course, it could be Lucifer's denial and the fact that there was only ten pages left, but that's easily fixable.

Then there's a huge open ending that, while I do like those from time to time, this one might be a bit too open. I could have used to resolution, but I suppose when Lucifer is the narrator, you aren't exactly going to leave the book especially satisfied.

It's very much a 3.5 star kind of book. I could have used more, but I wasn't too disappointed.
