I gave this 3 stars but it is GENEROUS! Okay, after writing my review, I’m dropping it to 2.5 stars. I know, I feel like it’s such an unpopular opinion!! I really wanted to love this book.
It started off so good and really grabbed me but it went downhill fast. The plot was really going nowhere and that’s a shame. Most of this book was quite boring and the story was so weak. There was so much potential with the really great world that Duncan built!
My biggest issue with this book are the characters! Oh wow, they are so bland and I didn’t really care about them at all until the absolute end. It was so hard because when I should have been WOW-ed by the twists, I just felt meh. There is no depth to any of these characters.
The ending of this book was pretty much the only thing I enjoyed in this whole book. Okay, I did like the beginning too but not much else. There’s a lot that comes to light and our characters are finally showing some personality and a little more interest.
I really am not into the romance in this book. It feels forced and it took over much of the book. I can’t tell you how many times she commented on how she felt something but she should hate him and kill him. Okay, then maybe just kill him? LOL Just kidding!! She just brings it up so many times and Yikes. I’m not a fan of insta love either and there’s so much of it.
Overall, I really can’t recommend this book. There are some things that have kept me interested but mostly is just missing so much depth. I really wanted so much more from the world, characters, and plot. I will be reading the second book. I bought it a few months ago and I probably wouldn’t have continued otherwise. I really don’t have the highest expectations because I’ve seen a lot of people who enjoyed book 1 not liking book 2. Wish me luck!
