This book had a great premise but not the best execution. The story was extremely repetitive, only to lead to an ending with no climax or answers. There wasn’t much emotional connection to the main character or her family. I listened to the audiobook, and while the narration was fine, I really couldn’t find myself paying attention. I feel like I wouldn’t definitely liked the book better if I’d read it digitally. Yes, the events that happen in the book are horrifying but something about it just wasn’t well done for me. The main premise is the experimentation done on lower class people of color (specifically black people) but I feel like that wasn’t delved into enough either. We just hear about the experiments done on Lena, and that’s about all that happens. Not much interaction with the other characters. Not a good look into Lena’s mind as she endures the experiments and separation from her family. I didn’t really understand the point of the letters to her college roommate, cause again there wasn’t really any emotional connection with their friendship. I feel like the author purposefully wrote the book this way and they achieved their goal, it just isn’t for me. Unfortunately, this was just a disappointing read.
