Deacon King Kong by James McBride
4.0

A character driven novel involving drug factions at war, a shooting, a treasure hunt, a mystery and even a touch of romance. ⁣

This is the kind of book you have to surrender yourself to. For about the entire first half of the book I felt like I had no idea where everything was headed, but I went with it and I'm so glad I did. ⁣

We are dropped into the middle of Five Ends Baptist Church and its community. The residents are an eclectic bunch and I often found myself smiling or shaking my head at the things they said or did. It’s the kind of community that stands together, looking out for each other, watching each other’s children, celebrating each other’s successes and commiserating over the hardships. The more I listened (I did the audio), the more they won me over. Plus, they have nicknames like Sportcoat, Pudgy Fingers, The Elephant and Hot Sausage - even the names make you smile, don’t they!
