The Highland Fling
by Meghan Quinn
This book started out with making me laugh so hard while I was eating in a restaurant that I worried what the people around me were thinking. But that’s really no surprise with a story written by Meghan Quinn. I laughed so hard almost all the way through, well, really all the way through to be honest. Except for a few parts that I was crying because what was happening just really got me. I mean, I totally understood Rowan, although again I think at the bit at the end he was a bit over the top. But I was very upset with Dakota’s part in the final conflict scenes. However Quinn knows how to make the characters redeem themselves, as well as make you understand exactly why they do what they do.
This was actually my second book in a row set in Scotland. So it was kind of fun reading about this country that I’ve wanted to visit since I first discovered the show Outlander, and since my sister moved there in 2019 right before all the Covid stuff hit and messed up any chance of going to visit her. Maybe in 2022. We’ll see. But this book only made me want to go more! Plus, I’ve asked my sister to bring me back a Curly Wurly candy bar next time she visits us.
I loved that Bonnie’s name was Bonnie, because of how Scottish people call something “bonny” when it is pretty. It was also fun hearing all the Scottish slang, some I’d heard from my sister or other stuff like Outlander, others were new and I told my sister she had to ask her new Scottish friends about it! The word holibags amuses me so much. But when Bonnie said “holi-boobies” I was dying laughing.
And then there was all the food, cakes, etc. that they talked about! I need to try that stuff too! Oh Meghan Quinn, I adore you and your characters and stories soooooooooo much!
