I never knew what to expect when I first started reading this as, we all know, film adaptations can greatly differ from the actual books. So when I learned something about Mr Hyde, it was (admittedly) a bit of a mild shock. However, the majority of the book was indeed mysterious, delightfully worded and inevitably depressing. I normally prefer lengthier books, but this was a perfectly constructed novella which I enjoyed reading.
