The Well of Ascension
by Brandon Sanderson
I'm finding the experience of reading Mistborn quite strange. I struggled for a long time to get into The Final Empire, but absolutely loved the final third. With The Well of Ascension, I was gripped all the way through but something just felt lacking. Ultimately of the two, I actually prefer The Final Empire.
The good parts: I love the fact that we have an entire book dedicated to the part missing from most stories - the aftermath of taking down the evil ruler. The political aspects were great. I enjoyed the growing relationship between Vin and Elend, and particularly liked seeing them both finding their place as leaders. I loved OreSeur as a character - his relationship with Vin and the revelations about him were a definite highlight of the book.
The parts I'm more ambivalent about: I just don't care much about the Deepness, it's much less interesting to me than the human threats. The climax at the end with twists and reveals was surprising yes but unlike in The Final Empire I didn't really like the surprises (and there was one big twist I saw coming). The relationship between Sazed and Tindwyl felt forced - really, the only Terriswoman we've met and she happens to be the person he's in love with? I also wanted more of the friendship between Sazed and Vin that was so special in book one. I did like Zane as a character but he felt underdeveloped and underutilised.
Clearly Mistborn isn't ever going to be my favourite series, but I am invested and there is much that I enjoy about it, so I will probably pick up The Hero of Ages pretty soon.
