Defy Me
by Tahereh Mafi
Okay. So I have very rapidly become obsessed with this series and these characters. But I can’t give this book 5 stars. Something is stopping me. The writing was different, the plot was worse somehow even than the first book. There were really good moments and it moved fast but like it didn’t make me want to devour it.
And of course, the name change. I don’t like it. Like I really tried but I just don’t. I feel like book…what number is this even? 5? It’s too far in to change the name. I’m too used to her as Juliette. The only saving grace is (of course) Kenji, since he’s still gonna call her J.
Anyways, this was good but it feels like it’s started to go off the rails. Hopefully the next one is better and I mean, even after this review I still gave it four stars. And I’m still going to read the rest of the series.
My favourite part of this book was them encountering the picture of Warner, it made me cry. Just…listen to this. “And then, just off to the side, there’s another figure. A little blond boy. So blond his hair is white. He’s staring, intensely, at a single dandelion in his hands.”
I just…SOBS. My precious Aaron.
