One of those books that I really enjoyed while I was reading it, and then I started thinking harder. . .

First, if you're going to use the name of historical figure as your main character, please use more than just the name. I was really surprised when I learned that Nella Oortman was a rich widow when she married Brandt. And that he wasn't convicted of sodomy.

Secondly, if you're going to use an actual historical object as your inspiration, one that visitors can today visit in a museum, don't have your main character chop it into bits with an ax. Seriously. That's just weird.

Finally, there was just a little too much going on--closet homosexuality and an interracial love affair that results in a baby? Really.

And like others, I wish there was an actual resolution to the whole "miniaturist" thing and how she knew all that she knew.

Fun while reading, but it just falls apart when you start thinking.
