I really enjoyed the first StrangeWorlds Travel Agency book, and gave it 4 stars. Book 2 is a step above its predecessor. Maybe two.
The plot is significantly stronger in The Edge of the Ocean, and so engrossing in the second half particularly that I could not put it down to go to bed. The characters and relationships are excellent, not only the return of Flick and Jonathan but also several new characters. This is an exciting, fantastical adventure that kids will adore (not to mention some of us adults).
A personal note and very mild spoiler here - there is a character in the novel who is grieving. I struggled with my emotions reading the book, because the way the character responded to grief was almost exactly the way I responded to my dad's death just a few months ago. The way the character described feeling was exactly as I have felt, and sometimes still feel. I can't praise this portrayal highly enough, and yet at the same time it almost made it hard for me to get through certain parts of the book. I am however very glad that I did.
