Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
2.0

Before the Coffee Gets Cold just wasn't for me. While I enjoyed the first half of the novel well enough over time both the writing and the themes of the stories really began to grate on me

i will admit i knew almost instantly that Geoffrey's translation of this text wasn't for me. there as an uncomfortably proper poster to the prose that often felt clunky to me

separate from this novels translation Kawaguchi's habit of repeating information d nausium was tiresome at first but infuriating as the story ent aln.t its like he didn't trust readers to understand firly basic information and therefore felt the need to reiterate in formation over and over and over again.

Honestly those two points ere stuff I could have gotten over if i connected with the individual characters and their stories but i honestly found most of them frustrating. the one that set me off were the sisters that blatantly called a woman choosing not to run her family's inn selfish ich to me was just ridiculous. maybe there cultural thing i;m missing but the way the story framed the mc's younger sister constantly begging and guilting her sister to abandon her own future for her sake as a kind thing was infuriating
