"hippie family from a commune adjusts to life in the real world" would be the interesting story to follow for part 2 of this book.  instead, the author skips to when the protagonist is a morose middle aged man dealing with Important Current Events. really ran out of steam in the middle and I had to push through to finish, even though the author's writing is gorgeous. also hilarious that this involves a global pandemic in the year 2019.
