Read this for a bookclub.
This rating is tough. I liked the historical fiction aspect of this book, the naval adventure and the peek into indigenous culture.
I did not enjoy the horror elements of this book, I would have appreciated a historical context note at the end and the book was just too long. At times, I felt like I was slogging though the book like the characters were slogging through the ice. I also did not appreciate (though probably historically accurate) the rampant racism and sexism prevalent.
I was however pleasantly surprised that there was a relatively satisfying ending.
