Skin of the Sea
by Natasha Bowen
Loved the imagery, the protagonist, and the West African folklore. A few things kept me from rating this higher (spoilers:) 1) using character deaths solely to advance the plot, 2) somewhat predictable plot lines, and 3) a missed opportunity to further develop Simidele’s connections with the other Mami Wata, which would have fleshed out some of her conflicting loyalties. As much as I appreciated the author’s inclusion of so many different folklore elements, some of them felt tangential or like they didn’t mesh well with the rest of the worldbuilding. Still a solid and interesting read.
