Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

very descriptive writing that sometimes was beautiful and described a moment in wonderful ways and sometimes didn’t really fit the situation that well.

the characters were good, but not great, but i did like how evaline evolved through the story from this hopeless romantic to a bit more of a realistic person without losing herself completely -still believing in love and beauty but also understanding  that that can be ugly as well.

i did think that the „you’re jealous“ thing - is that a trope of is mentioned a lot in the book?- was too much for me.
maybe because i don’t understand jealousy and don’t see why every character automatically seems to assume that if someone is question, doing or saying anything their only motivation behind that could possible only be jealousy.
i also think it was used as an overly simplified way to get out of some situations through the book.
something happens and a character has to justify why they did? could help themselves they were jealous.
want to know something about someone or they are warning someone about something? clearly they are only doing that because they are jealous!
it felt to simple and easy.

the world was nice. and especially when they arrive in the north the descriptions of how it looks? beautiful!

but the plot? eh.
for a lot of the book it was build up in slow motion with very sporadic moments where the plot would jump and and something would happen only for it to crash down again and not really a lot happening for pages on end.
it’s not necessarily bad.
but i prefer a bit more of a… smooth plot process i guess? i want the plot to build up and up and reach the top toward or at the end of the book if that’s how the story goes.
or give me a completely even tempered book where it just slowly drifts along for the entire book.
but this change between a lot of nothing just to throw something „exciting“ into it we all saw coming with the amount of pages left or characters involved…. i just didn’t love it.

it’s a good book.

but it could have been great.

the author had a fantastic writing style but think using that for example to write cozy fantasies? would be perfect.

a fantasy like this where stuff is happening and there should be this build but to a bit climax… but it’s either too slow or too fast or too little or too much of either descriptive writing and/or plot, i just felt like it wasn’t the perfect fit.

i still enjoyed this and i do want to reread this at some point and see if after knowing how it all goes if i might enjoy it more or less.

also bonus point for the beautiful cover!
