The Daughters of Ys by M.T. Anderson

First, the illustrations are just beautiful. I enjoyed the colors, style, and the expressions. The expressions have so much personality.

I wasn't familiar with this tale before, but there are so many different themes here. It makes the story feel congested and different plot points end abruptly. There's greed, scarcity, black magic, favoritism, dusty dudes who can't keep it in their pants, "do the ends justify the means," how some children have the weight of the world on their shoulders while others can be oblivious and keep their heads in the sand, etc. Magic has a real consequence in this story. In a sense, one character makes a deal with the devil, and eventually, he comes to collect.

Some things get resolved, but others do not. Like, what was the story behind the wife's first husband? They hinted at the dad not knowing the whole story, but they never concluded that.

This Celtic tale gets a bit dark with beheadings, blood, demon eyes, and some sex. The artwork was endearing, but the story is a bit messy.
