Haru: Book 1: Spring
by Joe Latham
I thought the art in this book was really beautiful and I also appreciated the overall idea of the story. It was also great to see that Haru is a nonbinary protagonist. However, the storyline seemed a little disjointed and I had some trouble with the dialogue. The book seemed to oscillate between an epic fantasy story and a more modern struggle of some friends who get bullied at school and struggle with identity and grief. I don't think that these storylines had to be mutually exclusive in this book, but it seemed like they were and it made the book a little confusing at times, especially if you were trying to follow conversations between characters. I will likely read the next volume when it comes out because I did enjoy this one and would like to see how the author ties the story up.
