Washing My Mother's Body: A Ceremony for Grief
by Joy Harjo
emotional
reflective
I don't read much poetry so when I saw this particular book I thought it would be the perfect way to delve into the genre. The addition of watercolor illustration was a wonderful way to add emotional depth to the poetry as well as make the genre a little more accessible to new commers. As an eldest daughter who has lost her mother I found this poem to be incredibly relatable and saw myself in the poetry. I thought washing was beautiful imagery for intimacy, remeberence, and grief fitting the poem perfectly. I did not find myself overcome with emotion while reading but I found the poem to be beautifully reflexive of my own experiences.
