Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs
5.0

Silence Fallen was actually a book in the Mercy Thompson series that I was not expecting to 5*, but against all odds an author has actually managed to get to make me fall more and more in love with a series. Patricia Briggs has managed to take her series from strength to strength and that's not always something you see by book 10 of a series.

I was mostly sceptical of this book because it seemed that Mercy would be distanced from all those secondary characters like Adam, Stefan, Zee, and the pack who generally round off the Mercy Thompson series and make it great. However, Briggs cleverly wove in new characters, new cities and new plot twists that really tied nicely together.

We also got a refreshing new twist as we managed to get multiple chapters from Adam's POV and really get into the mind of a werewolf and examine his relationship with Mercy from his side. This was great because the one element that I really love about the Mercy Thompson series is the lack of drama between Adam and Mercy. They are a strong couple, who love each other, work through their problems and do not fight for the sake of it. This was really highlighted in the last book where Adam's ex-wife came back into the picture, and Adam was supportive of Mercy and not his ex-wife. Briggs only went on to strengthen this relationship as we got Adam's perspective on relations and saw the two separated. It also meant that this novel was not entirely about furthering Mercy and Adam's relationship which lots of lengthy series involving a romance tend to do.

This book really highlighted how resourceful, canny and sassy Mercy is. She's such a strong, female character and so well rounded. She never gives up fighting and always manages to get into tonnes of trouble which makes these stories so interesting. This installment also highlighted how strong friendship and family can be and that is one of the core features about the Mercy Thompson series I really like. This is not just about a man saving his girlfriend, this is about a woman saving herself and having great friends who can help her out.

There was also a big plot twist at the end that I did not predict or expect. I love books that can still surprise me and quite often in urban-fantasy books there are very standard plots that novels follow. However, its nice to know I can still be surprised.

Overall, this leaves me really sad that I have finally read all 10 Mercy Thompson books and need to wait until another one is actually released to read more. It's safe to say this series is now a firm favourite and I'll be re-reading it again sometime, after a short break because I can't seem to put the books down or sleep when I start reading them. In the meantime, I'll be moving onto the Alpha & Omega series to fill the void of having no Mercy.
