foxglovefiction 's review for:
Serpent & Dove
by Shelby Mahurin
So, this book is beautifully written and kept me on the edge of my seat. HOWEVER. I had a lot of major issues with the worldbuilding and it's EXTREME cis-centrism and ableism.
I very highly do not recommend this to trans or nonbinary readers because the entire magic system is built on the basis that (some) women are witches. Only women can be witches, acc. to the world, and witches are all women because they can give birth. That's a little line from the book. All of the male children of witches are given away at birth because they can't be witches. There's a spoiler-y thing near the end that says there's hope that something MIGHT change here in the next book, but. Yeah.
There are also so many ableist words throughout this book, mainly used by the female protagonist. It was honestly more than a little painful.
I wanted this to be a lot better in the worldbuilding aspect because there were some good things about it. But it was what it was.
