Snakehead
by Peter May
Well, he did it again. An un-put-downable book, but we have yet another separation and coming together of Li Yan and Maragaret. This time May does at least recognise some of the cultural pressures put upon inter-racial couples and logistical challenges of being together in such large countires (USA, China) and with demaning jobs. The plot interested me and I liked that we knew what the stakes were at the beginning this time round. That being said, one of the two subplots the motivations and the baddy behind virus itself! was virtually ignored until the last 10% of the book which was a little disappointing. I was surprised at a couple of turns, and unspurprised at others. I still really enjoyed it and will definitely continue reading the series (hopefully returning to China as the setting), but this was the weakest of the series so far in my opinion.
Moderate: Trafficking
Minor: Death, Physical abuse, Racial slurs, Racism, Rape, Sexual assault, Sexual content, Medical content, Medical trauma, Sexual harassment, Deportation, Pandemic/Epidemic
The focus is upon human trafficking willing Chinese 'economic migrants' from China to the USA. As such there is sensitive material around their journey and treatment upon arrival.
