I got to say, if anyone can followup Taylor's Wolverine, which was pretty strong throughout, Mariko would be the one.
I haven't read too much from Mariko but what I have I enjoyed. Especially her "Being Super" Supergirl miniseries. So I was pretty excited to try this for her name alone, but also because this continues the story of Laura (And Gabby and Johnathan the Wolverine!).
So we see that Laura, X-23, is now on missions to stop clone makers and such. While her trip back to the X-mansion with beast to find out more information is pretty cool, the best part is when Gabby meets the Cuckoos. Since everyone int his book is a clone they can all relate in ways. However, the Cuckoos are up to no good but not as sinister as you may think. Will them crossing paths with X-23 and Gabby being the end for them?
Good: Gabby and Laura's relationship is one of my favorite in comics right now. The big sister, little sister, fighting crime and kicking butt is perfect. I also love the fact the Cuckoos and Laura/Gabby can relate but yet so different. The ending issue is super cute and shows that the series can be light heart even with their dark past. The dialogue is pretty strong too as well as the pacing. Art is solid all around and everyone has a unique look.
Bad: I didn't love the storyline itself. It held no big surprises, and felt kind of safe. I also think you need to know more about the Cuckoos to really appreciate their part and I've only seen them a handful of times so I wasn't feeling their plea to much here.
While maybe not a homerun I still think it's great. It seems to be finding it's footing the longer it goes and I'm hoping Mariko gets to keep writing Laura since she obviously has a good understanding of the character. A 3.5 out of 5, but I'll bump it to a 4.
