This book is my first introduction to horror/thriller, it’s a gothic paranormal horror and wow, it was a wild ride. Though it took a bit of time for the eeriness to kick off, I was still gripped from the beginning, learning about Stella the main character and her past and learning about Annie and also her sister Madeleine. When the eeriness began I questioned if the ghost was bad, and then when the plot twists began and it turned sort of into a murder mystery I was stuck to the book like glue, trying to figure out who the murderer was? I was attempting to guess before it was actually revealed and I was wrong on every account, the ending was brilliant! The world building in this book was wonderful! The writing I also found to be quite poetic at times which I really enjoyed!

I really bonded well with Stella and especially Annie and sometimes Madeleine, I think they both are very special characters. I felt sad for them constantly being gaslit and not believed, and when Mr Sheers finally believed them as well as Hector, I was so happy! I almost thought at one point that maybe Stella would have had a romantic connection with Sheers, I felt she deserved that at least after all the trauma she had been through. But I’m really happy how the book had ended, though I kind of wished Stella got to speak to her late fiancé one last time, the flashbacks to their ending had made me quite emotional. One funny thing I’ll add is that I had annotated that “Mr sheers is one deluded dumbass” but I actually came to adore him in the end!

My only minor negative would be that it took some time for the eeriness to kick in but it’s not enough to let this book down at all. All in all a fantastic read!

If you want to have an introduction to horror/thriller I’d definitely recommend this book! I’m looking forward to adding more to my tbr and reading them! I will prewarn that it does have some involvement of death surrounding children, so please be careful reading this! But I would say the ending was bittersweet. Peace at last for all those involved
