Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup
by John Carreyrou
One of those books that has you shaking your head in disbelief throughout. The elements of her story are incredibly compelling: woman in Silicon Valley (underdog story); intelligent and cunning and in charge of her own company (against the norm); pretty with a deep voice (best of both worlds); and lastly her drive to succeed no matter what the cost (human nature). It made for a fast-paced crime thriller that made lab testing much more interesting than I ever thought!
I’m picky about true crime, since there are often many people and events that tend to get confusing. Carryrou juggles all these elements well, plus some science and engineering details, keeping the chapters succinct without being too light on the details. (Good job to the editing team as well; I’m sure a lot was left on the cutting room floor.) True crime can be sensational, but this book balanced that with the investigative piece, a truly impressive undertaking.
4.5 stars.
