I really appreciated the pacing of this book. There's a lot of books with romance out there that worry so much about the romance that they don't pay any attention to having the readers know the characters as individuals first. This book does the opposite. We really get immersed into each character's head and get to know their motivations and who they are before they really start getting to know each other. I think it was wise for the author to do a dual perspective for this because it made each character's arc stronger. Both characters were likeable for me and it was easy to feel sympathy for both of them. Neither of them has chosen the circumstances of their birth and they come from really different worlds. Despite that, when it comes down to having to learn to work together and help each other out, they step up to the plate and it helps show that they are both good people and aren't all that different after all. The story at the very start feels very sci-fi but doesn't focus too heavily on the world building. Hints are given here and there about the technology that is available in the world and how the politics of it all works and eventually much more is revealed in the end. However, I'd say the story relies heavily on character development that is shown as both main characters are thrown into less than desirable circumstances. They end up finding much more than they ever expected and at least one of them realizes that not everything about those they love most is at it seems. A very interesting story with well developed characters. Not one of my favorite books that I've read so far this year, but it's definitely worth picking up.
